The Residency Criteria and Aims

If you have been represented by a gallery in New Zealand for 12 months or more, or have shown at least one solo exhibition in a New Zealand gallery (private or public), we would love to hear from you.

At this stage The Gullies Arts Residency focus surrounds the visual arts.

The purpose of our residency is to house an artist with a level of commercial success and/or wider recognition for their work, in order to elevate and amplify the arts and arts awareness within the Rangītikei region. We hope to see conversations strengthen between art and agriculture in Aotearoa in order to see better understanding from each sector around the other and celebrate rather than berate in a world of constant critique.

The Gullies’ Commitment

The Gullies provides a warm, safe home and nearby studio for 8 weeks to one artist per year.

The Gullies commits to purchasing at least one piece of work created by the residency artist in response to their time at The Cottage within a pre-agreed scope.

The Gullies Arts Residency aims to support established artists in Aotearoa who, in turn, wish to show their commitment to ‘grass roots’ art within the wider community.

The Gullies offers a stipend of $350 per week on top of The Cottage and The Studio at The Gullies use.

The artist in our community

The artist-in-residence commits to at least one open studio day at The Gullies and a further one event within the Rangitīkei district whereby their practice will be discussed and showcased: the format will be decided upon by the artist in collaboration with Laura Morrison of The Gullies.

The artist will also commit to a formal native tree-planting ceremony on the The Gullies farm at the conclusion of their tenure.

The artist will need to feel comfortable in committing to a limited edition run of one of their works created or conceived of during their residency at The Gullies. The number of editions will be decided upon in consultation with the artist, based on their career to date. This element is a key component to the survivability of The Gullies Arts Residency.
